Victor Wainwright & The Wildroots

While on route to the soundcheck for Victor Wainwright and The Wildroots, I was listening to the Homerun Show on CBC FM, (yes, I listen to CBC radio) the host, Sue Smith was talking about “the best bets” for shows to catch. They start talking about …. Victor Wainwright! Funny coincidence I thought. At that point I was on Papineau just north of Sherbrooke cueing up for the Jacques Cartier Bridge. In my rear view mirror, I saw a large Mercedes van coming up to merge in front of me – no problem. As the van starts pulling in front of me I notice the large black & white image of a musician at a keyboard. Then I notice the name in large white lettering , “Victor Wainwright”! Then in perfect timing as the van smoothly merges into my lane in front of me, CBC starts playing one of the songs from Victor”s CD. It was a bizarre moment that probably defies the odds on a “coincidence” calculator. Driving behind Victor”s van, on route to his soundcheck, while CBC is playing one of his songs!!!

I decided to follow the van, and partially ignore the GPS app on my iPhone while  trying to figure out the odds of all the events. (I made a mental note to perhaps pick up a lottery ticket). Was this an example of Murphy’s Law working in reverse? (“All things that can go right, will go right!”)

Arriving at the Salle Jean-Louis-Millette loading door, I introduce myself to Victor and the members of The Wildroots, Nick, Terrence and Billy. After such a warm introduction, I put my camera bag on a table and felt compelled to give them a hand loading their gear into the theatre with the technicians.

It’s always tricky to be “invisible” while trying to capture candid images at soundcheck, but as everyone gets to their tasks at hand, I become less noticeable and went about capturing these images.
